FORT SMITH (KFSM)-With heat indices in the triple digits in the River Valley, many families are beating the heat this Sunday (July 26) by heading out to Parrot Island Waterpark.

People started lining up before the park opened at 10 a.m. 5NEWS asked visitors their secret to staying cool in the excessive heat.

“We go underneath the canopies about every hour, and we [reapply] sunscreen every hour,” Susan Russell said.

Resident Jessica Hall makes sure to keep her family of five hydrated.

“We always carry our big jug of water,” Hall said.

Visitors were also seen lathering on the sunscreen, wearing hats and staying in the shaded areas of the park. They also stayed cool by splashing around in the wave pool and the lazy river.

Parrot Island is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
