FORT SMITH (KFSM) – A man died following a fire at an apartment in Fort Smith Sunday (July 26), according to the Fort Smith Fire Department.

The fire department responded to a fire at Cambridge House Apartments located at 4001 Rogers Avenue in Fort Smith.

Battalion Chief Boyd Waters said a 62-year-old man was taken to Mercy Hospital where he later died.

The man was a resident of the complex and was the only person inside the apartment at the time of the fire, Waters said. The man’s dog was also in the apartment and survived.

Waters said neighbors used fire extinguishers to try to put out the fire before crews arrived. Waters said crews were able to put out the fire in a matter of minutes.

The apartment complex did not sustain any structural damage, but furniture inside the apartment was damaged, according to Waters.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
