ROGERS (KFSM)- The old firestation and city hall building in downtown Rogers is being renovated into loft-style apartments.

Chief Tom Jenkins said the structure was built in Elm Street in 1929, and at one point in time, housed the police station, city hall, fire department and a jail.

"There's not a real heavy market for former police and fire stations and so the unfortunate thing is the building set vacant for more than a decade," Jenkins said.

He said a developer bought the property in 2014 and has been working to make the building livable ever since.

"I think it's going to be just a very gentle blend of contemporary urban redevelopment that saves our history," Jenkins said.

Jenkins said the building housed the fire department for 60 years. He said when they first moved in, they had one paid firefighter named Frank Jacobs and only one truck.

"It's a great way to preserve not only a historic building, but a historic building with a lot of memories for local public servants," Jenkins said.

Many relics from the Elm Street firehouse can be found at the museum at the main fire station on 1st Street. The museum is open daily.
