FORT SMITH (KFSM)--Around a hundred volunteers, including dozens of hairstylists set up shop at the Riverfront Amp Monday (August 10) for an event called the ‘Day of Love’.

Organizers said it's all about coming together and taking care of the homeless in our area.

“I`m on fixed income,” Michael Fridley said. “I can`t do too much.”

Rick Eubank is a local business owner in Fort Smith and the one who organized the Day of Love. He said volunteers fed more than 250 people and gave more than 80 haircuts.

“There`s just too many people out here that don`t have a place to sleep tonight, and it`s not really fair,” Eubank said.

Volunteers spent the day handing out clothing, food and bottles of water.

“We`ll probably get some blankets or something for our house that we need,” Carol Jones, resident said.

Jones told 5NEWS she was homeless for two weeks, and still struggles to make ends meet.

“We appreciate everybody`s help,” she said.

Around 40 hairdressers volunteered to help give people in need a little boost of confidence as well.

“They`re all gonna get a hug too. That`s just part of it," Eubank said.

Eubank said more than anything, the day is about coming together and taking care of one another.

“It`s more of taking all of the different kinds of people that we have, the different opinions, the different feelings about things and bringing them all in, and saying this is a common goal that we can have, and we can all love people together,” he said.

Organizers are also holding sign-ups for the VA and Good Samaritan Clinic. They're also offering free HIV testing.

A ''Day of Love' dedicated to helping the homeless will take place in Fayetteville on September 18th at Walker Park. For more on how you can help or take part, click here.
