BENTON COUNTY (KFSM) -- As election season approaches, the race for Benton County Sheriff has already attracted three candidates who are trying to oust incumbent Sheriff Kelley Cradduck.

According candidate Tim Filbeck, more than 20 years of law enforcement service is what most qualifies him for the Benton County Sheriff’s badge. Filbeck entered the race after speaking with his wife and deciding he could have a positive influence in the sheriff’s office, especially with local youth.

“One thing that I want to bring to the table is some more youth oriented programs,” Filbeck said.

Filbeck said he would create several youth-focused programs, including a junior deputy academy, which would introduce children to law enforcement officers in their area.

“Youth is where our future is at," he said. "And that is where we need to work on. I want to bring back the D.A.R.E. program to every 5th grade class."

As far as hot topics on the state level, Filbeck weighed in on the open carry law.

“I feel like the [open carry] law specifically says that you can [open carry],” he said. “That you can wear a firearm open. And, as long as you are not conducting some criminal activity, then you are acting within the guidelines of the law.”

As for Arkansas’ current jail overcrowding problem, Filbeck said he wants law enforcement officials from across the state to come together to come up with a long-term solution.

“[Jails are] overcrowded, and people are relying on that so that they do not need to go to jail,” he said. “We need to correct that problem.”

Other candidates for the position are Glenn Latham and Paul Pillaro. Incumbent Kelley Cradduck is expected to run as well.
