JOHNSON COUNTY (KFSM) — Multiple law enforcement agencies walked a boy to class Monday morning (August 17), in memory of the boy’s father who was killed in the line of duty.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office shared the following statement on its Facebook page:

“As a Law Enforcement Family we made a pledge to Sonny Smith to be there for his children. Today I want to share some photos of Charlie’ s first day of school. Sonny’s daughters and his oldest son wanted all the focus on their brother today just another example of what great kids Sonny and Amy have raised.

Deputy Sonny Smith was shot and killed by Fred Kauffeld on May 15, 2015 after Smith had responded to a burglar call. Kauffeld pleaded not guilty to capital murder charges and is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 25, 2016.
