FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) -- Three members of a local Girl Scout troop are building a hammock hotel at Wilson Park in Fayetteville.

Karen Smith, April Stanley and Abigail Lawson from Troop 5114 started the project Wednesday (Aug. 26) and plan to hold a grand opening in September.

The goal of the hammock hotel is to encourage minimum impact and leave-no-trace guidelines when hammocking and slacklining in Fayetteville parks.

"People are hanging their hammocks and slacklines on trees, but they're breaking the tree limbs and it is hurting trees so we were like 'what if they could hang poles up?'" Lawson said. "So we are going to put hooks on those poles back there and people will be able to hang their hammocks on them."

The hammock hotel is designed to minimize impact to trees in the parks. When hammocks and slacklines are repeatedly tied to tree trunks, they weaken and wear away the bark make the trees more susceptible to insect infestation and disease.

The poles used to build the hotel were donated by SWEPCO and other building materials were donated by Lowe's and Home Depot. The Fayetteville Parks and Recreation Department dug the holes for the poles.

The grand opening of the hammock hotel is scheduled for Sept. 12 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
