FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) -- United Way of Northwest Arkansas is currently partnered with 400 companies in the area. Their kickoff on Thursday (August 27) was aimed at getting new employees from businesses to come out to the University of Arkansas's campus before work to partner with United Way. Congressman Steve Womack also spoke at the pep rally, and said that it's astronomical how many children are on free and reduced lunches in Northwest Arkansas.

Alexa McGriff, director of marketing and direct programs said, "It's really gonna be a community wide effort, we need some people to donate money, we need some people to donate time, some people to donate knowledge, so it's really gonna be a combination of people's talents and people's treasures, like was mentioned today."

The campaign works by companies choosing whether they want to make a donation through payroll deductions or though a one-time donation gift. On Friday (August 28)they will host another pep rally at John Brown University in Siloam Springs.

According to United Way 1 in 4 children in Northwest Arkansas lives in poverty, and their goal this year is to get the community aware and involved to bring down that statistic.
