It’s September, but it sure doesn’t feel like it! September is marked by rapid change in our area with temperatures falling from normal highs in the 80s and 90s to the mid 70s at the end of the month.

As I’m typing this blog at 4pm on Thursday, September 3rd, the heat index is nearly 100º! But it’s not this map that catches my eye; take a look at what’s going on farther to the northwest.

As the sun angle continues to get lower and lower on the horizon the colder temperatures start to build up around the northwest portion of the Yukon in Canada. eventually this air will become dislodged and move south.

It won’t happen this weekend. Both Saturday & Sunday look hot with above normal temperatures in the 90s. In fact, with the expection of Idaho, Montana and the high elevations of Colorado, it’s hot everywhere.

This is the exciting chart and it shows the temperature two weeks from now around Sunday, September 12th. Notice the large blue area that’s moving south in response to low pressure that’s developed across the Great Lakes. That colder air will eventually track south into Arkansas and Oklahoma somewhere around the 14th or 15th of September.

So long range, we’re looking at a sizable pattern shift. The front next week will bring lower temperatures because of the extra clouds and the rain, but the cooler “fall-like” airmass is going to hold off until the end of next weekend so that by the 3rd week of September it’ll not only be football season… but it’ll feel like it too!!
