FORT SMITH (KFSM) - As the temperatures start to drop, the Salvation Army is already working hard to keep people in need across the area warm.

They have two locations which are thrift stores where they take donations. One location being in Fort Smith on North 32nd Street. The other location is in Van Buren on South 26th Street. Both stores will take any items that you want to donate.

The Salvation Army is needing donations of everything that you would need to keep warm in the cold weather. This includes sweaters, coats, sweatpants, and hats. Even bedding is a necessity like blankets and pillows. That's not all, they're also in need of bath soap and shampoo.

People can donate money so that the Salvation Army can purchase exactly what they need. If your interested in donating, you can stop by their office in downtown Fort Smith.

Workers with the Salvation Army said they see the numbers increase in the amount of families that stop by this time of the year. "We even relax our guidelines for staying in the shelter when it's 32 degrees outside," said Acie Turner who works with the Salvation Army.

Turner adds, "We try to get everybody off the streets when its cold outside."

Don't forget you can also volunteer for the Salvation Army. Many opportunities are coming up this time of the year such as Thanksgiving Feast, angel tree, and the popular red kettle campaign.

The Salvation Army in Fort Smith will start their Coats for Kids campaign within the next two weeks. You can donate any coats, new or used, during the drive. The coat drive will continue throughout the remainder of the year.
