LAVACA (KFSM) -- The Sebastian County Sheriff's Office is investigating after human remains were found on the Arkansas River near Lavaca. Sebastian County Sheriff Bill Hollenbeck said skeletal remains of either a man or woman were found. The identity of the body is still unknown.

The sheriff's office stated several human bones, vertebrae and clothing items were identified and processed by a crime scene team about eight feet from the edge of the Arkansas River.

The remains were collected and will be sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab in Little Rock for examination by the Medical Examiner, according to a media release.

Around 6 p.m. Thursday evening (Oct. 1), the Sebastian County Sheriff's Office said they received a 911 call from two local fishermen on the Arkansas River who said they had found what they believed to be human remains about 1.5 miles downstream from Vache Grasse Park.

Police were dispatched to the scene where deputies and investigators soon confirmed that the found remains were human.

A more intensive search is underway as crews continue to process the area.
