NORTHWEST ARKANSAS (KFSM) -- A national group is making trick-or-treating safer this Halloween for kids with food allergies.
The Teal Pumpkin Project began in 2014. People who are willing to buy non-food items like pencils, stickers and toys instead of candy, can paint a pumpkin teal and leave it on their front porch. The teal pumpkin lets parents who have children with food allergies, diabetes and other conditions know they can get safe treats at that house.
Rebecca Cross is mother of five. Her youngest child, Lincoln, has a rare condition called Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome, meaning he can only ingest formula. She said this initiative is a great way to make sure all kids feel included.
"He is just a normal little boy and he's at that age where he wants to do everything the other kids are doing, and so it would be great for him to be able to walk up to a house and actually get a treat he can have," Cross said.
There are also flyers, available here, that people can put out if they don't want to paint pumpkins.
