FORT SMITH (KFSM) — After more than 18 years of serving on the federal bench of Western District of Arkansas, District Judge Robert Toombs Dawson announced he will retire at the end of 2015.

Dawson, 77, was appointed by President Clinton on April 15, 1998 and took senior status in August 2009, according to a press release.

The Fort Smith resident received his law degree from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. He has also served as president of both the university’s alumni association and the Fort Smith School Board.
