188th Receives Outstanding Unit Award

FORT SMITH (KFSM)--The 188th Fighter Wing based out of Fort Smith received the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award for its work during 2011-2013.

The award is given to units that have distinguished themselves by exceptionally meritorious service or outstanding achievement that sets the unit apart.

"It encompassed deployment for us in the A-10. We took about 350 folks over to Afghanistan for over three months and we are very proud of our combat record there.  We were 100 percent effective in every mission that we flew," said Brian Burger, Operations Group Commander.

"It also included the support side of our mission, which included the support mission group folks and medical group folks.
More than 50 percent of our unit deployed during this time frame to 13 different contingency locations in support of 3 different operations," said Major Heath Allen.

The award consists of a ribbon that members now wear on their uniforms. The ribbon is red, white, blue and has a bronze leaf cluster.
