BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. -- Scores of coffee cans littered a Florida beach after washing ashore on Tuesday morning (Dec. 8).

The coffee fell from a barge shipment off the coast of Port Canaveral, Florida, over the weekend, the Coast Guard told News13. As many as 25 containers fell from the ship, which was diverted from its original destination of Puerto Rico.

The crew confirmed at least nine containers fell overboard, News13 reported.

One of the containers stored wet-cell batteries.

Although the batteries should not pose an environmental hazard, the Coast Guard is warning that the container could cause chemical burns if someone touches or opens it because of the corrosive materials found in batteries.
