CUSTER COUNTY, Okla. (KFSM) — Two people were shot and killed in what authorities described as a ‘shooting rampage’ on Interstate 40 early Thursday morning (Dec. 17) in southwest Oklahoma.

Jeremy Doss Hardy, 36, of Pasadena, Texas, was arrested on suspicion of DUI in connection to the deaths of a man and woman who were fatally shot in “road rage” incidents.

Billie Jean West, 63, of Lone Wolf, and Jeffrey Kent Powell, 45, of Arapaho, both died from gunshot wounds Thursday morning, according to a press release.

Troopers with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said the shooting began in the town of Hydro around midnight.

Powell and his wife were traveling west when he was shot and killed, authorities said. Powell’s wife was inside the car at the time, and reported it to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. Powell was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect then drove to the town of Weatherford where he shot at another vehicle, striking West. She was taken to a Weatherford hospital, where she died from her injuries, according to the release.

Hardy was taken into custody around 1 a.m.  in Custer County, the release states. He surrendered near mile marker 50 after a short police chase.

Multiple law enforcement agencies are working with OSBI to collect evidence in the investigation.
