FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) -- A man died after being stabbed by his brother outside a Fayetteville home on Friday afternoon (Jan. 29).

Freddie Matthews, 40, is facing first degree murder and second degree battery charges following the death of his brother, Alfred Matthews Jr., 43, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

The incident occurred on 764 N. 54th Ave. near Clevenger Drive around 1 p.m., according to Sgt. Craig Stout.

The two brothers got into a physical fight in the backyard of the residence, Stout said. During the altercation, one grabbed a broomstick and the other grabbed a knife.

Freddie, who had the knife, stabbed his brother Alfred in the back, Stout said. Both brothers were taken to Washington Regional hospital, where Alfred Matthews later succumbed to his injuries.

After being checked for minor injuries, Freddie Matthews was taken into custody, Stout said.

Police say Freddie also punched a deputy at the jail in the face. He was charged with battery following the incident at the jail.

He will have his Rule 8.1 hearing on Monday (Feb. 1).

Police say Alfred Matthews' body will be sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for further investigation and to determine the cause of death.

Officers say the incident is still under investigation.
