The forests in our area hide all sorts of spectacular beauty within their hills and trees.

This week, the Adventure Crew searched high and low to try to find one of the largest waterfalls in Arkansas, hidden deep within Devils Canyon near Mulberry.

It was a gorgeous winter day to trek through the wilderness. Joe Pennington, 5NEWS photographer Brett Roberts and Sean Bailey teamed up with hiking guide Mike McKinnon, who has hiked this canyon over 20 times.

After parking off the dirt road, they continued to walk the trail, admiring the views from on the top of the canyon. They found a very important tower of rocks, known as a karin, that signals them to turn left.

Then there was a fun fork in the road to get to the first waterfall, Devils Canyon Junior. You can hike on top of the rocks and end up overlooking the waterfall.

The second option is spelunking through a small cave to reach the base of the falls.

McKinnon, who's been hiking for more than 20 years, said there's a lot of intrigue that draws people to waterfalls.

"The beauty, combined with the roar of it, and just how the water is constantly changing how it's running off," McKinnon said. "The beauty is the bottom line."

Next, they went hunting for falls over 5 times taller.

They hiked over the hill and then along the creek bed to get to what locals call the Cedar Falls at Devils Canyon.

The water wasn't rushing much over the 60 foot drop, but the views were spectacular.

After that, they stopped for lunch on top of the waterfall, overlooking miles of forest.

Jesse Freeze and two friends were also hiking the trail that day. He said there's always something new within these woods.

"You know it's a beautiful place, it's a good place to spend time," Freeze said. "When you get out here, you just don't think there's anything out here and it surprises you, I think that's the fun part about it."

Just a reminder: Always take precaution around the steep cliffs, as the rocks are very slippery.

That wraps up this week's Adventure Arkansas!

This is a tricky to find trail and waterfall, so we listed directions, a map and the GPS coordinates of the location below.
