WASHINGTON COUNTY (KFSM) — A 14-year-old boy died Tuesday morning (Feb. 16) after a mobile home went up in flames in the Summers community in Washington County, according to a member of the teen’s family.

Taylan Taylor, a student at Lincoln High School, was home alone when the fire started because his father had gone to work.

A charred pile of rubble was all that was left at the Anderson Road scene after fire crews left the scene Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s just a great loss. It hits kind of hard when it’s so close to home,” said neighbor Clint Dunnagan. “We knew the boy and he was just a great little kid.”

Another neighbor said she had known Taylan since he was a little boy.

“I’ve known Taylan since he was about 2, and I gave him a pair of boots once and he thought they were the best work boots he had, they didn’t hurt his feet,” said Naomi Vaughn, a family friend. “He was so proud of them. He’s a good boy.”

Lincoln High school will be providing counseling services to students and staff through the rest of the week, said Principal Courtney Jones, adding that it was heartbreaking to see the loss of such a beloved student.

“He had a big personality. He played basketball and he loved basketball and he loved people. He never met a stranger,” said Jones. “That was kind of the way he was.”

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said they were called to the mobile home on Anderson Road around 2 a.m. The fire marshal said a family member living in a home across the street noticed the fire and called 911. A family member also told 5NEWS that he had heard an explosion.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to the fire marshal.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the cover the funeral expenses for the Taylor family.
