FORT SMITH (KFSM) – After 30 years of roaming the sidelines as the UA-Fort Smith women’s coach, Louis Whorton has coached his final game at home.
And fittingly, the Lady Lions came out on top.
Whorton won his 647 career game as UAFS topped Rogers State 58-46 and gave the veteran coach his 19th 20-win season in his coaching career.
“I did not want to take away from the game you know we had a chance to win 20 games that was our 20th win which is a benchmark of a good season,” Whorton said after the game. “Then we had a chance to finish second in our conference which we are going to do now so there was a lot riding on that game and then you add to the fact that after 30 years you can imagine how many players I’ve had and how many cheerleaders we’ve had and assistant coaches we had a ton of them out there today.”
The win, coupled with a Texas A&M-International loss, gave UAFS the No. 2 seed in next week’s conference tournament. Lubbock Christian is the top seed after finishing the regular season undefeated.
