SEBASTIAN COUNTY (KFSM) – Many disabled veterans are unaware of all the tax benefits they are qualified to receive. Disabled veterans in Sebastian County can save a lot of money if they apply for those tax exemptions.

Veterans who are 100 percent disabled can qualify for the tax exemption and to do so they can go to the Sebastian County Courthouse, Greenwood Courthouse, or the State Revenue Office located on Phoenix Avenue.

The veterans have to be classified as disabled by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Those veterans who qualify can apply for exemptions for their real estate and personal property taxes.

First off they can start the process with their veterans representative who will determine what their qualifications are and what they need. One piece of paperwork that the veterans will need to have is they call a summary of benefits. This paperwork tells the veterans what benefits that they have.

The letter began being distributed to veterans in January and February. They need to bring it to the treasurer and collector’s office. If they don’t get the summary by mid summer, Sebastian County Senior Deputy Collector Marcy Shelton will be calling or writing the veterans to remind them. “It saves them thousands of dollars a year for veterans,” said Shelton.

According to Shelton, “They’re struggling because they’re on a fixed income.”

The same process goes for the widows of any veterans. “Just check with us and see if you qualify..we would love to help you out if you do,” said Shelton.

The deadline for them to turn in their paperwork is October 15th.
