Tips On Helping Folks Prevent Seasonal Allergies
FORT SMITH (KFSM) – The flowers and trees around the area are starting to bloom and while it’s beautiful several folks are suffering from spring allergies. Many parks in the area are making it a tough place to be with all of the pollen floating around.
Twenty to thirty percent of adults will suffer from allergies and it’s actually more common in kids. The Cooper Clinic in Fort Smith helps treat allergies and they have already been seeing an increase this season of patients that have been fighting allergies. Doctors said this is because of the increase of pollen in the air.
Back in late February until now, cedar trees have been the main issue. Then grass pollen usually starts up around May and June. Doctors do recommend to stay away from the things you’re allergic to but that can be difficult.
However, if the symptoms do get bad enough they recommend to go see a doctor for an allergy shot which are the most effective treatment. “We generally like to have the patients try medications first though because it’s expensive and inconvenient for them,” said Dr. Aubrey Ziegler with Cooper Clinic.
Doctors do have some helpful tips for you to help fight the pollen.
- When driving, keep the windows rolled up then at home keep all the windows closed.
- You might want to stay inside between 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. because that’s when pollen counts are the highest.
- Wear sunglasses when you’re outside. This will help protect your eyes from any pollen floating around.
Doctors said that people will usually get a break from having outdoor allergies during the hottest part of the summer which is late June into early August.
Allergies sufferers will also feel relief after Thanksgiving typically after the second frost of the year.
