FORT SMITH (KFSM) — Crews broke ground Wednesday (April 13) downtown on a pocket park called “Garrison Commons.”
The pocket park will feature a stage for live entertainment, a screen for movies, and a permanent food truck.
John McIntosh, Executive Director of 646 Downtown, said he could not release what kind of food will be available, but said the food truck will be open for lunch and dinner, Monday-Saturday.
Construction crews excavated dirt and cleared the way for more work over the next four weeks.
“We’re demonstrating the momentum in downtown Fort Smith,” McIntosh said. “We took a vacant lot with nothing on it; we’re gonna turn it in to a community park in a matter of weeks that a lot of people can enjoy. And we’re bringing our first permanent food truck to downtown Fort Smith and we think there’s a big demand for that.”
It is estimated the park costs more than $20,000, paid for almost entirely by donations.
The pocket park is expected to be ready by early June.
