FORT SMITH (KFSM) — The University of Arkansas Fort Smith is warning people about a scam attempt that has been reported in the area.

The university received several reports of a man who is going door-to-door in local neighborhoods trying to raise money for a “UAFS traveling basketball team,” according to a UAFS statement.

The man is not affiliated with the university or any sports teams, the release states.

There is a Fort Smith Lions basketball team, which is a legitimate organization. However, the man is not affiliated with that team either.

The university is warning anyone who is solicited by the man to not give him money.

Contact the Fort Smith Police Station if you are approached off campus, or contact the University Police Department at 479-788-7110 if you are on campus.

Additionally, no UAFS Foundation employee will go door-to-door soliciting donations.

If you have any questions about the validity of a UAFS Foundation representative, contact 479-788-7020.
