FORT SMITH (KFSM) -A project honoring a Fort Smith legacy is nearing completion, but organizers are asking for the public’s help finishing it up.

Specifically, they’re asking area residents to purchase a brick which will then be laid near the base of the historical monument downtown. Those who purchase the brick can also have a name engraved on it. Organizers said some engrave the names of their family members while others choose to engrave the name of a military member in order to honor them.

Each brick costs $75 with all proceeds benefiting the completion of the project.

The memorial will stand at Cisterna Park which represents a major battle fought during World War II. It’s also one of the battles General Darby fought in. Once complete, the statute will feature General Darby mounted on a 1942 Harley Davidson motorcycle. Organizers said they chose that design because it’s how Darby moved between his troops during the war.

Those behind the project said they wanted to honor General Darby’s contributions throughout World War II and his ultimate sacrifice as the founder of the U.S. Army Rangers.
