FORT SMITH (KFSM) — A local college is one step closer to begin classes next year.

The Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine has been granted the ability to start recruiting students.

The first class will be 150, but school officials said they’re expecting to receive more than 5,000 applications. Now that they can start recruiting the school will begin accepting those applications immediately.

Kyle Parker, the president and CEO of Arkansas Colleges of Health Education, said it will be a competitive process for students to get into the school, but he said they’re focusing on students in this area.

“We’re looking very strongly at trying to find students within this region, the state of Arkansas over into Oklahoma because they understand this culture, and our idea is to try to give access to affordable care, and that’s a very difficult thing in the state of Arkansas,” Parker said.

Parker said there will be about 150 staff members at the school, and the average salary will be nearly $100,000.

Parker added that the staff, students and school itself will generate approximately $100 million a year for the economy.

The $34 million school is still under construction, but staff will be moved in permanently by June 1st, and classes will begin in August of 2017.
