KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) — A Kansas City, Kansas detective who was shot multiple times near the Kansas Speedway Monday (May 9) by a suspect who started a massive manhunt has died from his injuries.

The KCK Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #4 identified the victim as Det. Brad Lancaster.

Police Chief Terry Ziegler said the shooting happened just after noon near Hollywood Casino, 777 Hollywood Casino Blvd., when the detective responded to a report of a suspicious person.

When the detective confronted the person, police said the man shot the detective and took off in his unmarked car. The person, identified as Curtis Ayers, 28, crashed the detective’s gold Malibu into a silver Mercedes near North 118th Street and State Avenue, shoving both cars off the road.

The detective’s gold Malibu was found with about a dozen bullet holes through the front windshield and sheriff’s deputies said the detective was behind the wheel when shots were fired.

Ayers is believed to have then carjacked another vehicle with two children inside from that area. That car was ditched at 141st Terrace and Hollingsworth Road in Basehor where another car was taken. The little boy and girl were found to be okay and still strapped in their car seats in the back.
