OZARK (KFSM) -- Protestors stood outside the Franklin County Jail Thursday (May 26) after an inmate died there earlier this month.

Today would have been Cody Franklin's 21st birthday and a family friend said she just wants to make sure the public is aware of what happened.

"All we can do I draw attentions to it," Betty Payton said. "It's wrong, it's injustice. How can we right a wrong? By bringing attention to it."

Franklin was arrested on suspicion of obstructing governmental operations and his friends want to know what happened when he was being held at the jail.

"We feel like his life was taken for no reason," Samara Hernandez said. "His charges were minimal at best. It is overcrowded and I want to know why they were holding him on such a small charge if the jail was so full."

Franklin County Sheriff Anthony Boen said he understands the family wants answers.

"I hate it for the family," he said. "It is very sad and I hate that it happened here. I understand their concerns and they are wanting answers to what has happened and I understand their concerns and the reason they are upset because they do not have those answers right now."

Sheriff Boen said he spoke with Arkansas State Police and they are doing everything they can to speed up the investigation.

Records show Franklin had been arrested and convicted before on charges ranging from minor in possession of alcohol to theft of property.
