SILOAM SPRINGS (KFSM) -- In honor of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, those in Siloam Springs built a memorial for fallen veterans.

With the ring of a bell, 32 natives of the city were honored for their actions.

“Thank you to the families, because they are part of the critical support,” said Tim Griffin, Arkansas’ lieutenant governor.

Griffin said days like Memorial Day are designed to remind everyone to remember those who fell for our freedom, especially during a time where military enrollment is declining.

“Fewer and fewer families have family members serving in the armed services,” Griffin said.

Griffin said memorial like this should serve as an educational tool.

“If we don’t teach the next generation, they may not know,” Griffin said. “They are not automatically going to grow up to share these values. We have to teach them.”

The memorial showcases the names of the 32 veterans, whom served in battles from World War I, to Operation Enduring Freedom.
