LAVACA (KFSM) -- A local woman has entered a women's-only race, but instead of running or driving, these women will be flying.

Cindy Coleman is originally from Lavaca and has been interested in flying since a young age.

"My mother worked for Grady Stone Aviation, and so I came out there a lot, and I flew with him and his son," she said Tuesday (June 7).

Coleman she was hooked after her first flight, but it was not until later in life she started flying her own plane and now she is racing it.

Coleman is participating in an air race exclusively for female pilots called the Air Race Classic. The purpose of the race is to encourage more women to become pilots.

"I am very competitive and if I am going to do something, I want to win," Coleman said.

Coleman and her co-pilot will be flying a nearly 2,500 mile route from Arizona to Florida and she said they have set their sights on winning.

"You have to fly a handicap prior to and then that sets up your airspeed and then you are actually competing against your airspeed," she said. "That is how they do the winner, is who beat their airspeed the best."

But, she said even if she does not in she is still going to have fun.

"It is a new adventure for me," Coleman said.

The race begins June 21 and ends June 24. For more information click here.
