OKLAHOMA (KFSM) — The Cherokee Nation will be donating $500,000 on Thursday night (June 9) to fund a new exhibit at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian.
The new exhibit, “Americans,” will open in fall 2017, and will help dispel myths and educate visitors about major moments in American history, according to a Cherokee Nation release. The exhibit will include major moments in the history of the Cherokee Nation, including their forced removal and the Trail of Tears.
The tribe is making the donation to further their mission of the history and culture of the Cherokee Nation, the release states.
Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Bill John Baker and Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr. will be presenting the check to NMAI director Kevin Gover at 6:30 p.m. at the museum, according to the release.
