PENNSYLVANIA (KFSM) — A former Razorback has ended the first round of the U.S. Open on Friday (June 17) not only in the lead, but with the record-breaking low score of 66.
Andrew Landry, who teed off for the Razorbacks from 2007-2009, has a one-stroke lead in the tournament held at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania.
The previous record for the opening round of the U.S. Open was 67, which was held by both Ben Hogan and Gary Player, according to an Arkansas Razorback press release.
The tournament started Thursday (June 16) and will wrap up with a fourth and final round on Sunday (June 19). Play during the first round had to be postponed Thursday night due to inclement weather, so golfers returned to the greens early Friday morning.
Landry quickly shot to the top of the leaderboard, then ended the round Friday morning four under par. He had six birdies and two bogeys.
As a Razorback, Landry received All-SEC honors three times and honorable mention All-American honors in 2007 and 2008. He was awarded third-team All-American honors in 2009. Additionally he had the fourth best stroke average in program history at 72.61 in 114 collegiate rounds.
