FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) -- As the Fourth of July weekend approaches, many people will be out on the roads, going to and from holiday parties.

Police departments across the country are making an effort to ensure the safety of drivers and their passengers.

The campaign is called, "Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over."

In Fayetteville, police started the campaign on Wednesday (June 29), and it will end Monday (July 4). Fayetteville officers said they usually have a decent number of patrols out every night, specifically assigned to look for drunk drivers. However, they'll add up to four additional officers a night during the campaign,  to spot people who are driving under the influence.

"Fayetteville is a very busy city when it comes to drinking and partying," said Corporal Dallas Brashears, of the Fayetteville Police Department. "We want people to have a good time but we also want them to be safe, and now that we've got more than one taxicab available for people, we've seen a lot of the drinking and driving go down."

Several police departments around the area have chosen this time of the year to do the program because many people are more likely to drink during the holiday.

River Valley police departments will also be kicking off their "Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over" campaign during the Fourth of July weekend.
