FORT SMITH (KFSM) -- The community came together Sunday (July 10) to show Fort Smith law enforcement and first responders how much they are appreciated.

The group Together Fort Smith held a cookout at Creekmore Park for police officers, firefighters, emergency responders and members of the military.

"Just the look in their eyes, like wow, finally someone is saying thank you," Together Fort Smith founder, Sherman Oneal said.

Oneal said this is one way the community can give back after the shooting and killing of police officers in Dallas.

"Just like anybody else, they like to hear thank you," Oneal said. "They work hard. It's funny to me that the same people that bash them, in the event of something happening, the first three numbers they're going to dial is 911."

Oneal said it is also important to bring the people of Fort Smith together.

"Together Fort Smith is here to do just that and put the unity back in the community," Oneal said.
