NEWTON COUNTY (KFSM) — The Newton County Sheriff’s Office was searching for an escaped inmate Thursday (July 21).

The sheriff’s office posted a mugshot of Ryan Campbell, 31, on their Facebook page late Wednesday night.

Campbell is facing first-degree battery and aggravated assault charges, according to authorities. The sheriff’s office said Campbell severely beat another man putting him in a coma for a short while.

It is not clear which direction Campbell is heading or if he is armed, but the sheriff’s office said he should be considered dangerous. The sheriff’s office is┬áconcentrating its search efforts east and south of Jasper toward Mount Judea. Multiple agencies are assisting in the search.

The sheriff’s office said the inmate escaped from the exercise yard by climbing over two fences, one of which was nearly 20 feet tall and topped with razor wire. They said Campbell was seen on camera climbing over the first fence and jail personnel responded, but he was able to get over the second fence and escape.

Information about Campbell’s escape and whereabouts should be reported to the sheriff’s office at (870) 446-5124.
