LITTLE ROCK (KFSM) — A ballot committee called Arkansas Wins in 2016, which supports the passage of a constitutional amendment that would authorize casino gaming in three Arkansas counties, will have a 30-day window to gather additional support after falling short on the number of signatures needed to bring the measure to voters in November.
Despite falling short, the group gathered enough validated signatures to reach the required 75-percent threshold to receive the extension, they said in a press release on Wednesday (July 27).
The group submitted 92,120 signatures for ballot qualification on July 8. Each signature must be validated by the Arkansas Secretary of State’s office.
The committee needs at least 84,859 valid signatures to get the initiative on the ballot in November.
“Our campaign has covered significant ground in a short period of time because voters across the state understand the positive impact this proposal will have in the form of jobs, economic growth, tourism, and tax revenue,” said Robert Coon, spokesperson for Arkansas Wins in 2016. “We’re pleased with the results of the Secretary of State’s validation process, and we remain confident in our ability to obtain the number of signatures necessary over the next several weeks to place this amendment on the ballot this November.”
Arkansas Wins has until Aug. 26 to obtain additional signatures. They can also submit proof to the secretary of state’s office that rejected signatures qualify and should be counted.
