SEQUOYAH COUNTY (KFSM) — Deputies have begun searching for a suspect after two horses were let loose on Interstate 40.

Sheriff Ron Lockhart said the Oklahoma Department of Transportation was alerted around 2:30 p.m. Monday (August 1) of two horses loose on the road near mile marker 297.

Witnesses reported a white Dodge truck pulling a white, rusty two-horse trailer had pulled to the shoulder and opened the horse trailer gate, forcing the two horses out onto the highway. The male driver then returned to his truck and drove off.

It took deputies along with several other citizens several hours to catch the horses.

“We are lucky that no one was hurt, not to mention the chance of a vehicle hitting the horses” Lockhart stated.

Anyone with information about the incident, or know the persons involved are asked to call the Sequoyah County Sheriff Department at (918) 775-9156.

The sheriff stated that the suspect could face numerous charges, as well as possibly reimbursing the sheriff department for the several hours it took to catch the horses.

The horses  were placed at the Sequoyah County Horse Rescue.
