No Damage To Overpass Column After Deadly Crash On I-40

CRAWFORD COUNTY (KFSM) — There is no structural damage to an overpass column following a deadly car crash Tuesday morning (Aug. 9), according to the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department.

The crash took place under the I-40 and I-49 interchange just before 2:30 a.m., according to Arkansas State Police. A woman was driving eastbound toward Alma when her vehicle went off the road, drove through the median and hit a concrete bridge support, ASP said.

The vehicle burst into flames after the collision and the driver died at the scene, according to ASP.

Following the crash, AHTD bridge engineers examined the impacted column and found no damage that affected the structural integrity of the elevated ramp, AHTD said. There was some superficial cracking on the column about two-feet high by three-feet wide.

The identify of the woman killed in the crash has not been released pending the notification of next of kin.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
