SEBASTIAN COUNTY (KFSM) — The man arrested Wednesday (August 10) as the suspect in the shooting of two law enforcement officers has had his arraignment scheduled.

The arraignment hearing for Billy Monroe Jones, 34, has been initially scheduled for Wednesday (August 17). However, the Sebastian County Circuit Clerk’s Office said the case may not go for arraignment due to the nature of the case.

The circuit court administrator said a time has not been scheduled, as the courts will have to coordinate a transportation effort to bring Jones from the Crawford County Jail.

Jones was taken into custody after he was suspected of shooting at Deputy Cpl. Bill Cooper and Hackett Police Chief Darrell Spells. Cooper died from his injuries hours later, while Spells was released from a hospital with minor injuries.

A Greenwood K-9 was also believed to have been shot during the gunfire exchange with Jones, according to Greenwood Police Chief Will Dawson.

Jones is facing charges of two counts of felony first-degree battery and possession of firearms by certain persons.
