FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) -- When Fayetteville residents go to the polls on election day in November they will now be choosing between two candidates for mayor.

Fayetteville businessman Tom Terminella kicked off his campaign for mayor Thursday (Aug. 18) after filing for officer the day before.

He said he does not have experience as a politician, but that is what makes him a better candidate than incumbent Mayor Lioneld Jordan.

"Folks are tired of most politicians. They want a leader," Terminella said. "Somebody that is in business, that understands commerce, and has signed the front of a check. Not just the back of one."

As mayor, Jordan is known for supporting Fayetteville's anti-discrimination ordinance, which aims to further protect the rights of the LGBT community.

Terminella said he would have approached the process differently.

"I think it is very divisive. It created a lot of ‘right’ versus ‘left’ in the community," he said.

Terminella said he felt the issue should not have been mandated by the city government.

"Municipalities are all about police, fire, transportation, water and sewer services," Terminella said. "You know, the community, so all of these social issues, that is nowhere for a municipality to be."

With only 82 days to campaign, Terminella said he will be focusing on giving his pitch to the community.

"I am going to try and meet as many people as I can. Try and make myself available for as many groups and church organizations as I can," he said.
