GREENWOOD (KFSM) - A new year means more space and new classrooms for one group of students in our area. A new facility was built for students that are freshman in high school.

Classes began on Monday (Aug.15) and since then the 400 students who attend this new facility have been trying to find their way around the building. Inside the building, it has 16 classrooms, four computer labs, two science labs, and a new art room. "Our students are extremely excited to have new classrooms, technology, and furniture," said Principal Cody Chatman.

Chatman said his favorite part of the new building is the office area because of the security it provides for the students and staff. Visitors now have to be buzzed into the building which he said adds another layer of security.

Another feature he likes is a new class that students can take. According to Chatman, "We are offering to every freshman student an introduction to computer science course." The Greenwood School District is the very first in the state of Arkansas to offer the class this semester. "We're also backing that up with a keystone course that will help every student excel in high school and hopefully start thinking about colleges and careers," said Chatman.

Construction on this new project cost more than $11 million. A millage increase was approved by voters last year to help with this project. Also, the state of Arkansas gave the school a $2 million grant.
