JOHNSON COUNTY (KFSM) — An initiative to put the question of legalizing alcohol sales in Johnson County on the November ballot has been withdrawn.

The group Keep Our Dollars In Johnson County stated that it was made aware that a recent lawsuit filed against the county clerk revealed too many issues with the initiative.

Spokeswoman Susan Edens said the group withdraw the proposal Monday (Aug. 29).

Edens released the following statement from Keep Our Dollars In Johnson County:

“Our local committee members and volunteers have been working hard for months to give the people of Johnson County an opportunity to vote on whether to allow alcohol sales here – something we haven’t had the chance to do in more than 80 years. We received overwhelming support from folks around the community as evidenced by the thousands of signatures we submitted to the Clerk.  We’re of course disappointed that the measure will not be certified for the ballot, but we accept today’s outcome. We continue to believe this is an important issue for Johnson County’s future.”

Edens said the group will attempt to get a similar proposal certified for voter approval in the future.

“We believe 100 percent that Johnson County people want it,” she said.
