FORT SMITH (KFSM) -- The Unexpected Project will return to Fort Smith for another year starting Friday (Sept. 2).

For ten days, nine artists from around the world will be painting murals on buildings around the city in a follow up to the Unexpected Project's debut in 2015.

One of the murals will be going up on a grain elevator at the OK Feed Mill on B Street. Australian artist Guido Van-Helton will be painting three sides of the elevator. His mural will include portraits that symbolize the history and people of Fort Smith.

"Most of [the artists] are so skilled at what they do that they can really estimate their time and use it efficiently," Unexpected Project organizer Claire Kolberg said. "Anyone could take up to four to five days or the full week. It depends on the size of the wall and on the type of installation.

For now, event organizers are keeping the locations of the other murals a secret. They will reveal the locations on social media when the artists start working on their pieces Friday.

"Part of the fun is just having the full-day experience, seeing some great art go up, having a dynamic exchanges with fellow Fort Smith residents, possibly the artists and come out and have a great day," Kolberg said.

This year, the Unexpected Project also expanded to Fayetteville where a Puerto Rican artist is painting a mural at College Avenue and Center Street. Organizers said it was an opportunity to give the area a taste of the artwork that is going up in Fort Smith.
