FORT SMITH (KFSM) — An initiative to increase the interest and confidence of girls and women in STEM programs and careers launched in Fort Smith on Wednesday (Sept. 21).

Million Women Mentors supports the engagement of one million Science, Technology, Engineering and Math mentors to increase the interest and confidence of girls and women to persist and succeed in STEM programs and careers, according to its website.

Arkansas Lieutenant Governor Tim Griffin will serve as the honorary chair of Million Women Mentors in Arkansas. He said he is proud to serve as an advocate for STEM for all young Arkansans.

“Only twelve percent of graduating high school girls in Arkansas expressed an interest in STEM this year, compared to forty-seven percent of boys,” Griffin said. “Introducing young women to STEM and encouraging them to pursue STEM careers is essential for Arkansas to compete for good-paying jobs with other states and around the world.”
