A tropical storm in the eastern Caribbean has been upgraded to a hurricane with Hurricane Hunters finding winds of 75mph making it a Category 1 hurricane. It’s expected to strengthen to at least a Category 2 storm as it moves east of Jamaica.

Hurricane Matthew is the 5th named storm of the 2016 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

The track of the storm will move west and intensification is likely as it moves close to warm equatorial waters.

The storm will be no factor for Arkansas or Oklahoma and the turn to the north is largely due to cold front that moved into our area yesterday. The trough of low pressure will swing to the east and eventually carry the system along the east coast.

Model tracks generally have consensus that the storm will remain off the coast of Florida but could potentially affect the Carolina’s, Virginia, or Maryland as the system evolves and tracks north.
