FORT SMITH (KFSM)- Like many high school football teams around the state, players are preparing to take the field Friday night, with an extra something special on their helmets.

The initials, "KW," and the number three are now on the helmets of the Mavericks football team, all in memory of Springdale's Kyler Williams.

"It means a lot to just be able to go out there and play for him," Southside senior, Parker Dixon said. "I know some of the guys on the team knew him personally, and we just want to go out there, and play our hardest for him."

Players said the Springdale family will be on their minds as they play.

"It kind of shows us being a unit together, and we're real excited," Southside senior, Graves Schmidly said. "We're focused on the game, but our hearts go out to Springdale, and they have all week."

To some, they may just be stickers, but to players all over the region, they mean much more.

"I think we all realize that life is a precious thing, and that we all need to stick together and cherish the moments we have together," Dixon said. "It will definitely encourage all of us to play harder throughout the entire game, and just know someone is out there watching over us."

Head coach, Jeff Williams, and other coaches prayed with the Southside players after placing the stickers on their helmets.

Schools also plan to wear red at games around the state in honor of Williams.
