FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) -- The 28th Annual Chile Pepper Festival got off to a nice fall start -- with the weather cooperating -- at the University of Arkansas.  Approximately 6,000 runners participated and thousands were on hand to cheer them on from start to finish.

This run is an open invitational that accepts runners of all ages and skill.

Cross country official, Dan Houston says there’s a reason this event draws in so many people. "The university has a huge reputation for both track and field and cross country, so an invitational at the University of Arkansas is a big deal," said Houston.

After the athletes finished their races, they got to enjoy a feast of Mexican food catered by multiple local vendors.

Monies collected from the race are distributed to Northwest Arkansas high school cross country programs.  Last year, $47,000 was given and overall $447,000 has been awarded since inception.
