BAXTER COUNTY (KFSM) — PETA sent a letter to the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department on Tuesday (Oct. 4) asking to build a 5-foot-tall tombstone memorial at the site of a truck crash that injured and killed several cows last month.

The crash, which happened along Highway 5 in Baxter County in northern Arkansas on Sept. 25, “killed and grievously injured numerous cattle,” according to a release by the People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

The memorial would be a tombstone with an image of a cow and the text: “In Memory of the Cows Who Suffered and Died at This Spot, September 2016. Try Vegan.”

The memorial would serve as a reminder to drivers that safety is important when traveling with animals, according to the release. Additionally the tombstone is aimed at promoting a vegan lifestyle to “prevent further animal suffering and death.”

“This horrific crash left these sensitive animals dead and mangled on an already terrifying trip to the slaughterhouse,” said Tracy Reiman, PETA executive vice president. “PETA’s roadside memorial will remind livestock transporters that the least they can do is drive safely, while letting all travelers know that the best way to prevent such tragedies is to keep animals off the road in the first place by going vegan.”
