FORT SMITH (KFSM)- Friends and family of the 188th Wing of the Arkansas Air National Guard ran to greet their airmen as they returned home from Afghanistan.

"It feels surreal," airman, Jaime Flores said. "It still hasn't hit me yet, probably will hit me when I get home and see my parents. It's crazy. Time went by slow, but we tried to keep ourselves busy. But, it feels great. It's a shocker. I never thought I would experience something like we did."

Ten members of the 188th wing were deployed for six months.

"These airmen were in the area of responsibility doing some great things providing security at the Kandahar Airbase Afghanistan," Security Forces Squadron Commander, Major Heath Allen said. "So, they were doing some great things overseas making sure that the folks there in Kandahar were safe, and we're gald to have them safe and sound back here in Fort Smith."

For Jaime Flores, there are a few things he's looking forward to now that he's home.

"Mainly, just spend time with my family," Flores said. "Just kind of relax for a little bit, but definitely spend time with my family."

The unit's commander said homecoming is just a glimpse at the bond they share.

"This is just another example of the great community support we have here," Major Allen said. "The 188th is a big family. We're a very close-knit unit and we stick together. We're glad to have them back home and we're looking forward to working together again."
