FORT SMITH (KFSM) — Sunday evening (Oct 9.) Barling Police and Fort Smith Police officers were able to stop and arrest a driver who led them on a high-speed chase.

Investigators said an officer tried to pull over what was believed to be a stolen vehicle.  An officer said the driver took off and lead them on a high-speed chase down Rogers Avenue.  Speeds were estimated to be over 90 mph.

According to witnesses the driver hit another vehicle.  A Barling police officer was able to do a maneuver that brought the vehicle to a stop. The vehicle crashed into the rail of a bridge at Phoenix and Rogers Avenue. Police said the driver attempted to dispose of a loaded sawed off shotgun into a nearby creek.

Drivers nearby caught it on video.  One video from Miranda Nyguen shows officers pulling the suspect from the vehicle with their guns drawn and putting him in hand cuffs.

Police said Craig Mcdowell, Kevin Gilliam, Shawn Scharf and Carla Baty were arrested and charged with theft by receiving, fleeing with injury and felon in possession of a firearm.
